Pelagonium quercifolium (Royal oak leaf) is an aromatic, stimulant herb that has a resinous scent. All parts of the plant are astringent. The plant is taken internally for the treatment of rheumatism, hypertension and heart disease. The plant can be harvested at any time and is used fresh in infusions. Essential oils are obtained from the plant, with a laudanum fragrance. The dried leaves of this species are added to potpourri and to insect-repellent sachets. The bruised or crushed leaves release a warm, pungent aroma rather like incense. Our essential oil of P. hybrid has been analysed by KQATSA Analytical and Consulting Scientists. The results show that our oil contains between 19-25% decanoic acid, which is used to make esters for perfumes and fruit flavors and as an intermediate for food-grade additives. Decanoic acid is a C10, straight-chain saturated fatty acid. It has a role as an antibacterial agent, an anti-inflammatory agent, a human metabolite, a volatile oil component, a plant metabolite and an algal metabolite. The oil is rich in Germacrene D and Citronellic acid, the latter of which has been shown to be an effective insect repellent. Full GC/MS analysis available upon request.
